POSITION OVERVIEW

Under direction, the Survey Crew Chief will coordinate the activities of a survey crew in land surveying to determine precise location and measurement of points, elevations, lines, areas to be used in the production of the final survey deliverable.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Leads a survey crew supporting and under the direction of a Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) or Registered Professional Land Surveyor (RPLS)
  • Plans and manages daily work of assigned survey crew including use of equipment, preparation of field notes, and electronic data collection
  • Organizes crew with available resources to complete assigned project thoroughly, quickly, and efficiently
  • Utilizes survey equipment to map existing features of the survey including but not limited to locations, shapes, elevations, and dimensions of land or features upon the land
  • Performs all necessary boundary survey field research/retracement under the direction of a PLS/RPLS
  • Completes daily field notes and provides daily communication to Survey Resource Manager and/or PLS/RPLS on status of survey project
  • Maintains complete and accurate survey data collection, note keeping, field sketches
  • Ensures field survey activities are performed compliant with standards set by the company, state, and AEC/Surveying industry
  • Operates and has expert knowledge of survey equipment functions, capabilities, and limitations
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems and critically solve issues as they arise
  • Applies correct field procedures and equipment based on project site limitations
  • Mentor/train survey crew members about survey field principles and procedures
  • Download data collector files, import into Civil 3d, and process survey base map including a surface model
  • Provide input to Survey Resource Manager and/or Survey Team Leader for the performance evaluations of survey crew members
  • Maintains assigned survey equipment
  • Ensures assigned survey truck is kept clean, organized, stocked, and receives routine maintenance at the proper intervals
  • Participates in a team environment to achieve team/company goals
  • Complies with all policies, practices, and procedures to ensure safe working conditions and environment
  • Obtain FAA part 107 Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) pilot’s license and collect data with UAV when needed/required
  • Performs other duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid state issued driver’s license and clean driving record to meet company insurance requirements
  • Ability to work without direct supervision and make project related supervisory decisions for survey crew members
  • Basic knowledge and use of AutoCAD/Civil 3d
  • Familiarity of State Plane Coordinate Systems
  • Proficient in using all assigned and/or required survey equipment
  • Able to adapt to new processes, procedures, and/or technology

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or equivalent. Land survey education preferred but not required
  • 3 years survey experience including topographic surveys, boundary retracement surveys, constructions staking

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Ability to work outdoors including extreme temperatures and weather
  • Ability to work in urban and rural sites/roadways both containing flat or uneven terrain
  • Ability to walk, stand, stoop, kneel, bend, twist, squat, climb, and reach while surveying and operating surveying equipment
  • Ability to lift, carry, and use survey equipment/supplies, some equipment/supplies weighing up to 50+ pounds
  • Ability to cut and clear brush/trees as needed to complete survey duties
  • Potential exposure to harmful plants, insects, wildlife, and busy traffic
  • Ability to work overtime as needed
  • Willing to travel and stay overnight for project locations over 2 hours from home office
